Poem: Wrestling with Love

The rug was a rink
in front of the fire,
its design hooked
in roses
and thorns;
e
ach to a corner
fringed on desire,
hearts ready to fight
in poses
and throws.
The match was a show
of how they did play,
rolling and rolling
then pausing
to part;
b
ack to their places
for
rules to obey,
one not the other
fostering
the pact.
A blow from behind
turns trust on its head,
perverting the game
to cheating
for fun;
forgiveness is hard
her faith all but dead,
hope losing hope of
defeating
its fate.
Time is the stealer
of heartaches to face,
prospects laid to dust
in roses
and thorns;
more and less fondness
alive in each case,
the show going on
that closes
this thought.

Writing note: This poem was inspired by two cats I brought from England in 1990. They were a year apart and cousins. They are, of course, long gone…but, equally of course, not forgotten. The younger gray one, Sophie, was very carefree as a kitten but grew into a self-centered even schizophrenic creature (she never forgave me for putting her on a plane). On the other hand, Heidi, the black and white one, was the loveliest most balanced spirit I’ve ever known, a soulmate for sure, my best friend and protector through difficult times (no doubt the trip from England to the US was traumatic for her too, but when she looked around her new home and saw my mom and me that was all she needed–home was truly where her heart was!).

  2. Just as beautiful second time round Diane! I looked back at my original comment and the two kitties are still here. As you know Poppy is 20 and she has good and not so good days but she is still here and I look after her. ❤️ ️xxX

  3. Your poetry has an old world flavor, but is magnificent in the way it weaves through your art and croppers meanings that are as welcome as sun shining on great waters in the morning and evening. Your rhythms are wonderful to read aloud too. I’ve got to wander through your garden more and will, but in time.

    • Thank you, Thomas. I am deeply affected by your comment, poetry in itself. I don’t mind seeming ‘old world’ at all. And wandering should always be at a leisurely pace. I so appreciate you stopping by and know I have much yet to discover on your blog.

  4. You so deftly wove the duality of both the cats’ moods/temperaments and the feline story with the subtext of human interactions–it’s like unraveling a mystery. (Hopefully not that nice rug!) I enjoyed it very much . . . and I imagine I’d’ve enjoyed the two cats equally!

    • Hi Kathryn! I really appreciate your visit and thank you for your generous comment, picking up on its reflection of human interaction through the antics of the cats. Yes, they were wonderful souls…as I find all cats, as differing in personalities and behavior as people are.

    • Thank you so much!

      Yes, the dyamics of cats, in relationships with each other and us mere humans is something to behold. I know I’ll be writing more about them…every day they offer something new.

      I so appreciate your visit and taking the time to comment as well!

  5. The poem and image is so beautiful, and as I love cats (I always had cats untill last year, when the last one died of cancer) it speaks so much to me. Cats have a connection with our souls I think. Lovely.

    • Thank you so much, Ina.I’m so sorry to hear of your kitty loss…we just lost our oldest, she was 19. Hopefully another will find a home with you when you’re ready.

      ‘Cats have a connection with our souls I think.’ That is so true. They are among the most loving moments and memories of my life.

      Considering your fondness for cats, I think you may like my most recent post, just published today, too. There will be more…so much to write about with them!

      Blessings, peace.

  6. Beautifully written! Interesting…. I didn’t realize that it was about cats until you told us so at the end. I thought that it was about human relationships, which it could be. Your poetry is lovely!

    • Hi Savira! I love the names of your friend’s cats! Yes, cats’ interactions with each other and us humans can be very entertaining and enlightening! There is nothing aloof about my four boys,,,

      Unfortunately today I had to have our oldest cat, Angel, who was probably about 19, euthanized. Her entire digestive system was shutting down and it was time. It is never easy.

      Thanks so much for your comment! Always nice to see you here.

    • Thanks, Val! Glad you liked it. Sophie was a kitten when I did this painting…and though Heidi at first didn’t want much to do with her, conceded when Sophie decided Heidi was her mother and wouldn’t tke no for an answer!

  11. This is lovely!

    As the owner/slave/best friend etc etc of two cats this poem resonated with me very much. I have just been sitting in he garden on a seat on this beautiful Autumn day here with both of them on each arm of the seat like bookends!

    Your poem spoke to me of the love/hate relationship cats seem to have with each other. I’m afraid age is taking its toll on mine now and they frolic less and less but are, nevertheless, very content with their lives. And I know I play an important part in those lives albeit mainly on their terms!

    “The loveliest and most balanced spirit I’ve ever known” is lovely and I can understand that. But some can be unforgiving sometimes I know!

    Your illustration brought tears of love to my eyes; I don’t need reminding how much I love animals but this did.

    • Hi Christine,

      Your comment needed approval…which is strange, as I’ve already approved your comments on my site.

      Anyway…thank you! What could be better than sitting out in the Autumn sunshine with your beloved cats beside you? No matter what goes on in my life, it always pleases me to know I provide a good life for my kitties. Wish I could for more!

      I am very flattered and also moved that the illustration affected you so. I think the love of animals is very profond and deep and often frees our feelings into outward expression. That is good!

  12. A friend recently became the owner of two cats (sisters) but it would be more accurate to say that they own her! They are very spoilt, but also very endearing and your poem reminded me so much of they way they constantly intereact with each other. I don’t know if I was right to do so, but I also picked up on a darker theme? The way ordinary domestic interiors can become the scene of conflict:

    prospects laid to dust
    in roses
    and thorns;
    more and less fondness
    alive in each case

    I really enjoy reading your writing notes, and it goes without saying that I love the illustration.

    • Yes, cats are certainly endearing–and often consciously so! I never realized until I had more than one cat how interestingly and revealingly they interact…there are many ‘games’ they play…not unlike those that humans do…physically and emotionally.

      So you were right to pick up on a darker theme…something more than just about my wrestling kitties…

      I have 2 sets of brothers now, and they are all pals. There is a little competitiveness between them…for our affections, but never as aggressively or spitefully as some females we’ve had.

      The exception was Heidi…the ‘Mother Theresa’ of cats. She was always trying to keep the peace, and certainly never caused conflict. She even went out of her way to console me the night before putting her to sleep (she was 17 and had kidney failure).

      Thanks for reading so carefully and for your attentive comment.

      Have a wonderful week!
