Will the fruit

be wasted?

Fully ripened,

hanging heavy,

unpicked;

but not unchosen.

Blackbird, blackbird

bowing to temptation;

tasting before

the deer,

sudden snows or decomposition

steal it from sight.

  1. Dear Diane,

    That blackbird looks alert; his eyes are real and alive.
    I think it is surely a live one sitting on my screen!
    Every detail is authentic and a source of awe at your
    talent in all things creative.

    Always a pleasure to visit here!

    BTW…I have a book of verse called Cotswold Ballads by Frank Mansell copyright 1974
    with wood engravings by Robert Ball. It was a gift from one of The Peaceful Pub poets
    who once lived in that area.

    • Hi, Sarah. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely reflections on this post. Always a pleasure to welcome you here, and to visit you inspiring blog. And that book sounds wonderful -I must look it up and see if I can get a copy somewhere. I lived for 16 years right on the edge of the Cotswolds. Blessings. Hugs. ♥

    • Hi, Laurel! Thank you! So lovely to ‘see’ you here. I know from FB that you are settling well and very happy back in South Africa. I do have a question … as I would love to know what you thought of it … did you finish reading A House Near Luccoli? Hugs. ♥

    • I was doing these for a woodworker my ex and I knew in England. He paid me 50 pence per top and sold the stools for 40 – 50 pounds in the Cotswold, at Stow-on-the Wold and other touristry villages. I sent my mom this one, so that’s why I have it. He told me I should be able to “knock a top out” in an hour – of course, I spend 2-3 hours or more on each one. It certainly wasn’t profitable, but nice to know the ones I painted are out there somewhere. XO ♥

      • “Knock a top out”! This made me smile I can’t imagine you seeing any of your work as being knocked out. But as you say its nice to know your work is out there somewhere. Who knows, they may now be coining it in at auctions all over the place! Im thinking about he antique road programmes we have here on TV. I watch one most days while waiting for another programme to start) I will be watching fervently ow for stools with a painted top! It seems a shame someone may sit on your beautiful bird!
        ❤ Xx
