Written in the Stars (Repost)

A secret I kept
with the stars overhead
and a friend not a friend
who stole me from you;
for I would’ve gone on
sitting there on damp grass,
amid lightning bugs,
and hope in the night;
not drinking the wine,
but knowing it flowed.
No secret it was
with the journeys I took
and a hope not a hope
that looked for each sign
as the music went on
and the show knew its end
of once-again love
unable to grow
by right of what was,
at last, only right.
That secret I keep
with you among the stars
and a heart not a heart
that begs me: forget
as, yet, I would go on
sitting there in your sight
with unspoken words
for stories to tell;
not meaning to lie,
just hiding the truth.

Simply a Memory

I think of you in song.

Also,
in stillness, when
you were alone with your thoughts that
may or may not have been of me; when
you gazed into my heart as you looked elsewhere; when
the music wasn’t yours but was
your friend.

You stood beside the pavilion
striking a pose that set you apart until
you made a space for me in your smile.
What more is there to think of than that?

A Meeting Like Stardust

From A Friendship with Flowers by DM Denton © 2013

Do you know what it’s like

to come face to face

with someone

who has been where

you’ve been?

It’s like stardust

that makes everything

imagined real.

The past steps forward,

a stranger

who is not a stranger,

but the only friend

you’ve ever had.

If the world could disappear

it would be perfect.

Do you know what it’s like

to hear a voice

that says

what it doesn’t speak,

and feel a hand

that barely touches

but holds you close

to immortality?

This is very old (1994) and very personal – less of a poem than a rambling, but it was written from my heart that still feels it to this day.
